Join the sixth REAL webinar for Latin America as a collaboration between ILTS and ALEH (Asociación Latinoamericana para el Estudio del Hígado) on September 22, 2022. Drs. Ricardo Rabagliati and Fritzie Albarillo are going to discuss on strategies for the prevention and management of infectious complications after Liver Transplantation.
Objectives
- To present data on the current status of Infections in Liver Transplantation recipients in Latin America (Epidemiology, barriers/challenges and unique opportunities)
- To discuss tips for prevention and management of infectious complications after liver transplantation (emphasis on vaccination, immunosuppression strategies, pre-transplantation study (TBC, CMV, E Barr, etc).

Juan Pablo Arab, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at the Division of Gastroenterology at Schulich School of Medicine, Western University, London, Ontario, Canada. Trained at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica, Chile and Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. Dr. Arab is a Gastroenterology and Hepatology specialist, Transplant Hepatologist and Clinical Researcher with interest in clinical/translational research and epidemiology in alcohol-related liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. He has published more than 140 peer-reviewed papers, co-authored several book chapters and delivered lectures on liver-related topics at national and international meetings. He is an Associate Editor for Hepatology (flagship AASLD journal). Additionally, he is spearheading international collaboration groups aiming to study alcohol-associated liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (AH-LATIN and Global AlcHep BigData Network). Dr. Arab is member of the AASLD Global Outreach and Engagement Committee. He is currently the Vice-Chair of the Special Interest Group on alcohol-associated liver disease of the AASLD. Additionally, he is the President of the Chilean Hepatology Association and Vice-Chair of the Education & Scholarship Committee of the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS). | |
Rodrigo Zapata, MD, FAASLD. Professor of Medicine, Universidad del Desarrollo, Santiago, Chile. Transplant hepatologist and chief of Gastroenterology at Clínica Alemana de Santiago. He completed an AASLD clinical Fellowship in Hepatology and Liver Transplantation at the University of Southern California (USC) in 2000-2001. He served as the President of the Chilean Association for the Study of the Liver (2008-2010), President of the Chilean Society of Gastroenterology (2012-2014) and International Member of the Global Guidelines Committee of the WGO (2015-2018). His main clinical interests are in liver transplantation, viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma, with > 80 peer-reviewed publications and chapters of textbooks, as author or co-author. Currently, coordinator of the Special Interest Group (SIG) for Liver Transplantation of the ALEH (Asociación Latinoamericana para el Estudio del Hígado). |

Josefina Pagés, MD, is a medical doctor graduated from the Austral University, Argentina in 2010. She completed her Intensive Care residency at the Austral University Hospital and between 2016-2018 she completed her training in Hepatology and Liver Transplantation at the same hospital. She has been a specialist since 2018. In 2019 she served as Chief Resident of the Hepatology and Liver Transplantation service. Since then, she has been working at the Austral Hospital as a staff doctor in the Hepatology and Liver Transplant Unit. Between 2019 and 2020, she completed a Master’s Degree in Clinical Effectiveness with a focus on Health Technology Assessment. She is part of the multiple regional scientific societies and is currently the Argentine representative of the Liver Transplantation interest group and coordinator of the Cirrhosis interest group of the Latin American Association for the Study of the Liver (ALEH). Dr. Pages has a strong academic vocation, her main areas of interest are advanced liver disease, acute liver failure and liver transplantation. | |

Dr. Ricardo Rabagliati is an Internal Medicine & Infectious diseases specialist. Associated Professor at infectious diseases department of School of Medicine in Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. His main areas of interest are fungal infection and infections among immunocompromised patients. Dr. Rabagliati is member of the Board of Chilean Society of Infectious Diseases; Founder and member of Immunocompromised Patients Committe of Chilean Society Infectious Diseases; and Ambassador of International Society for Human and Animal Mycology. | |
Dr. Fritzie S. Albarillo is an infectious disease specialist in Maywood, Illinois and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Loyola University Medical Center and Edward Hines, Jr. Veterans Affairs Hospital. She received her medical degree from Cebu Doctors College of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years. She is currently the Medical Director for Regional Antimicrobial Stewardship at the Loyola University Health System and the Physician Lead at the Trinity Health System Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee. Since 2013 hepatologist of the National Liver Transplant Program of Uruguay and the Hepatology Service of the Hospital Central de las Fuerzas Armadas. Professor of the Teaching Unit of the National Hepato-Bilio-Pancreatic Center of the Universidad de la República Uruguay (UDELAR). Since 2022 Member of the Programmatic Area of STI-HIV/AIDS of the Ministry of Public Health of Uruguay. Areas of interest: viral hepatitis and liver transplantation.
